Abstract:As an important situation of China management research and practice, the drastic change makes the environment, subject and interaction increasingly complex and diverse. While this environment can provide organizations with significant opportunities for success and growth,it can also present significant threats and challenges. However, under the same situation, some companies snap and some other companies snap back. What makes the differences for individuals, organizations, communities and countries to survive, adapt and even prosper in the most unexpected environment? The answer largely lies in the characteristics of resilience.Resilience derives from adversity. The cultivation of organizational resilience in uncertain environment is not only an emerging topic with a high degree of theoretical frontier, but also a practical pain point for enterprises' current management, because organizational resilience can help companies to turn danger into safety in an unpredictable VUCA environment. Although its important strategic significance for current and future corporate practice has won general consensus, the existing research still lacks in.depth understanding of the nature of organizational resilience, the measurement method is not yet mature, and the research situation presents a fragmented scene. Based on this, this paper conducted a systematic review of domestic and foreign research achievement, attempting to provide new ideas and inspiration for future research of this topic.
Firstly, this paper systematically sorts out the representative research of organizational resilience, and summarizes that there are two main viewpoints of concept definition: dynamic view and static view. On the one hand, scholars who uphold the “dynamic view”regard organizational resilience as a dynamic capability or development process that can be cultivated and developed,so advocate defining organizational resilience from the perspective of the capability and the process. On the other hand, scholars who uphold the “static view”regard organizational resilience as the ideal traits possessed or the coping results achieved by organizations,so advocate defining organizational resilience from the perspective of the trait and the result.
Secondly,on the basis of cognizing and understanding the concept of organizational resilience, the measurement methods of organizational resilience are divided into two types: direct measurement and indirect measurement. This paper summarizes the main implementation points, representative scholars, measurement dimensions and perspectives and viewpoints of the corresponding concept connotation.
Thirdly, organizational resilience is a contextual concept, and contextual clarity is the hub to activate and develop organizational resilience. This paper sorts and categorizes the fragmented contextual factors involved in the literature, divides it into a narrow perspective and a broad perspective, and further condenses the contextual events of organizational resilience under different perspectives, which helps to clarify the application of organizational resilience.
Finally,in order to make up for the existing shortcomings and limitations of organizational resilience theory, this paper based on the analysis and summary of the conceptual connotation, situation picture, research object, influencing factor, coping mechanism, implementation effect of organizational resilience to integrate the above fragmented knowledge into a systematic research framework by introducing the I.P.O paradigm. In the I.P.O model of systematic research framework, the situation is the object, input ( I) situational stimulus; the organization is the subject, the process ( P) of organizational resilience is the core of research; and the resilience result is the organizational output ( O) ,which can be divided into three levels: survival, adaptation and growth.
Taking into account of the focus on theoretical frontiers and the breakthrough of practical bottlenecks, this paper aims to expand and enrich the research system of organizational resilience theory, and also provide knowledge support for practitioners to cultivate and develop organizational resilience
